A Real Reel soapbox: Dicaprio and the academy

Good night/morning Real Reel readers.

Earlier I watched ‘Revolutionary Road’ and thought to myself, “whats the academy’s deal with Leonardo Dicaprio?”  I mean this guy has done career defining role after career defining role and the Academy of Arts and Sciences continues to overlook his talent. Yet people like George Clooney, who continue to portray the same character in every film are fawned over. Seriously! What does Leonardo have to do?

Sure he’s been nominated three times prior, but his resume continues to remain solid; “Titanic”, “Aviator”, “Gangs of New York”, “The Departed” and “Revolutionary Road”, just to name a few. Without a question, Leonardo Dicaprio is one of the greatest actors working today. And now with “Shutter Island” and “Inception” being released this year, I feel its time for the Academy to take notice.

He’s only going to continue to get better with age, and with every role he grows as an actor. I honestly have no idea who he’s pissed of at the academy in recent years, but the blatant shutout needs to stop. Year after year he is has proven his talent and staying power; he’s always humble and never weary about his lack of recognition. 2010 is the year of Dicaprio! With two new movies released this year, both of which are highly anticipated, Leo’s chances of Oscar gold are increasing.

What do you guys think? Would love to hear some feedback.

I agree with what you have stated. I have noticed his growing success from his past films to the now “Departed” and the much anticipated “Inception” film. I truly admire his skill of acting and appreciate the type of persona presented. I am and will always be a fan not only of his acting abilities but of him as a person. He should be recognized by the academy!!!!

  2. I have long been a fan of Leonardo, and would love to see him get the recognition he deserves. He is truly an enormous talent.
