One of the first award events of the season took place last night in the form of the Palm Springs International Film Festival black tie gala.

A- listers such as Helen Mirren, Mariah Carey, Quentin Tarantino, Morgan Freeman and Marion Cotillard were all honored. Tarantino receiving the Sonny Bono Visionary Award for his effort in Inglorious Basterds.

The night also honored  up and coming talent such as, Anna Kendrick, whose supporting role in Jason Reitman’s ‘Up in the Air” is already garnering Oscar buzz.  Interviewed by USA Today, The Hurt Locker’s Jeremy Renner said he’s “dumbfounded” by all the attention he’s receiving.

“I’m still that guy who eats Top Ramen by candlelight — just in better clothes,” he said.

Renner along with Mariah Carey received the Breakthrough Actor honors of the night.

The gala, hosted by Entertainment Tonight’s Mary Hart, kicks off the film festival which will run through Jan. 17.
