A Real Reel soapbox: Hollywood and the remake

It’s official! There is a creative recession in Hollywood as it continues to recycle 80s hit after 80s hit.  It’s latest victim—Mannequin.

Mannequin? Really? Although I verbally destroyed the disaster that was “The Stepfather”,   I kept my mouth shut about the impending train wreck that is “The Karate Kid” starring Jaden Smith and Taraji P. Henson.  I also stayed quiet about the “Fame” remake and will remain mum on the subject of the “Clash of the Titans” remake.  But Mannequin? Come on!!

Heres the deal, as someone who is passionate about the inside workings of the industry, I happen to know for a fact that there is good material out there. The problem lies with studios who don’t want to take the risk on a newcomer but are willing to take a risk on recycled crap. We get it! The 80s was a great time for movies and for the most part we have the late John Hughes to thank for that, but its a new day.

When you consider the amount of independent films that are barely seen by a nationwide audience or scripts that sit on studios shelves for years at a time, its hard to believe that “Mannequin” is the go-to answer for an automatic blockbuster. And now rumors of other remakes such as “Rosemary’s Baby,” “Romancing the Stone” and “Back to School” are hitting the blogs and I am not happy about.

The bottom line—none of these films need to be resurrected. Let us remember them as they were… great. “Mannequin”? Really?   What’s next? “Sixteen Candles” starring Vanessa Hudgens?  Just the thought makes me want to chew on glass.
