Did You Know?

Sofia Coppola accepts her Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay (2003)

Did you know that:

  • Not counting current nominee Kathryn Bigelow, Sofia Coppola is the only American woman to be nominated for an Academy Award in the Directing category. (Lost in Translation, 2003)
  • Coppola didn’t win in the Directing category that year but she did take home an Oscar for Original Screenplay.
  • The Coppola family are one of two families to have three generations of Oscar winners. The Huston family were the first.
  • Fun fact: Although none of us are Oscar winners,  my mom did march with Martin Luther King, Jr, which I find pretty cool.

Pop Quiz:

Question: Who was the first black woman to win an Academy Award?

  • Answer: Hattie McDaniel. In 1939 Hattie McDaniel became the first black performer to win an Academy Award for her supporting role in ‘Gone With The Wind.’  In 2001, Halle Berry became the first (and only) black actress to win the Best Actress Oscar.
