Real Reel of the week: ‘My Blueberry Nights’ (2007)

I saw this film by chance a few years ago and I must say I was thoroughly impressed.  It’s the perfect movie for a rainy day; when all you want to do is kick back, relax with a glass of Pinot Noir and just enjoy the calmness of the afternoon.

Starring Norah Jones in her feature film debut and directed by Kar Wai Wong, ‘My Blueberry Nights’ tells the story of a young woman who takes a soul-searching journey across the country, meeting a few interesting characters along the way.

Norah Jones does an amazing job alongside seasoned actors such as David Strathairn, Rachel Weisz, Jude Law and Natalie Portman. Each of the mentioned actors lend an amazing effort to the film. Their  roles are very minor but they are all phenomenal in the short time they appear on-screen.

Wai Wong’s direction is simple yet effective and aesthetic, and allows for you to engage in the journey with Jones. Not only is the direction amazing but the music selection was outstanding as well, which included ‘Try a Little Tenderness’ by Otis Redding. The song was used a Weisz’s ‘theme song’ and every time it played her presence in the film became that much more important.

Simply put, ‘My Blueberry Nights’ is a film that comes highly recommended by The Real Reel.  If you’re looking for something simple and entertaining, try this one on for size.
