Reel News Blurbs: ‘Selma’ gets a few new residents + Weinstiens acquire ‘Company Men’

Keeping the momentum high from his award-winning season, Academy Award nominated director Lee Daniels continues to cast for his new film ‘Selma.’ For those of you out of the loop, ‘Selma’ is a film currently in pre-production based on the Civil Rights march led by Martin Luther King, Jr.  from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama in 1965.  Hugh Jackman and Lenny Kravitz have already signed on to play pivotal roles and now Liam Neeson and Cedric the Entertainer can be added to that list.

Neeson will portray President Lydon Johnson and Cedric will be playing Ralph Abernathy, the gentleman who helped Dr.King organize the march. British actor David Oyelowo will have the honor of portraying Martin Luther King, Jr.

In other news….

The Weinsteins get back to their indie roots and acquire  the US rights to  ‘Company Men;’ a film that will mark the directorial debut of writer/director John Wells.  The indie flick, which focuses on corporate downsizing,  stars Ben Affleck, Tommy Lee Jones, Kevin Costner and Chris Cooper and premiered at Sundance to nice reviews.

The Weinstein Company hopes to release the film later this year (read: November-December); possibly making us all forget about the travesty of  ‘Nine.’   If it does well and gets the Weinstein treatment, expect for it to compete during awards season.
