Casting news: ‘X-Men: First Class’ scores James McAvoy

James McAvoy is set to replace Patrick Stewart as Professor X  in the Matthew Vaughn directed, ‘X-Men: First Class.’

Now I know what you’re thinking— James McAvoy is like decades younger than Patrick Stewart, but that’s precisely the point. McAvoy would portray a young Professor Charles Xavier, as ‘X-Men: First Class’ is an inception story of how Professor X and Magneto came to discover their powers.

McAvoy is the first big pick for the latest installment of in the X-Men series, and in the coming months we can expect more big names to join him.  Personally I think McAvoy is a good draw; he’s a great actor who I wish would acquire more mainstream work.  In the meantime, I’m looking forward to seeing who else is lined up to star in this film.

Filming begins in late summer and Fox has already scheduled the film for a June 3, 2011 release date.
