Academy Awards in January?

Finally some awards news and it’s a doozy….

Could the 2011 Academy Awards take place in January??  According to Deadline,  the idea was entertained last night by members of the Academy during the AMPAS Board of Governors  meeting.

Now for some of you this may not seem like a big deal, but for the rest of us who live and breathe awards season— this is HUGE.  Having the Academy Awards take place in January would finally put the element of surprise back into awards season,  eliminate precursor award shows, and make the Oscars the “definitive awards show again”.

The Oscar’s taking place so late in the season has been a longstanding issue, so much that even their most nominated actress, Meryl Streep,  had this to say about it in an interview last year with Entertainment Weekly:

“As time has gone on, so many other televised award shows precede the Oscars, and I do think that’s diluted their importance,” she said. “Certainly, everybody seems exhausted by the time the same people have trampled up on stage at the Golden Globes, the SAGs, the Broadcast Film Critics, the Baftas….There are so many now and they’re all on TV. I mean, you wanna see some real acting? Watch somebody who’s won five times before they get to the Oscars, then they get up on stage and they do the performance of, ‘Oh! Yes!’ Wow, that’s a big job! And who could blame them?”   “I think the Academy should move it up to Jan. 1 and preempt everybody else. That is the big Kahuna, it’s the one that counts. And I think it’s just so bizarre that they allow themselves to be the caboose.”

Personally I think that sums it up. The Oscars is the big Kahuna and it is the one that counts.  Actors don’t give career defining performances to get a Golden Globe, they do it to win an Academy Award.

The only real problem is the fact that most “award caliber” movies are released in November, December and sometimes even January. This well-known fact leaves aficionados everywhere pondering about when exactly voters would have time to watch all of the movies in contention. According to Deadline, most films are screened between December 25-January 1 but if the Oscars moved to January it would be almost impossible to give every film a fair shake.

I love the idea, and like I stated before the element of surprise will be put back in awards season.

What do you guys think?
