Confirmed: ‘Black Swan’ WILL open the Venice Film Festival + a first look photo from the film

It’s officially been confirmed by Deadline and various other news outlets that Darren Aronofsky’s ‘Black Swan’ will premiere at the 2010 Venice Film Festival.  Aronofsky had this to say about the selection:

“The cast and crew of Black Swan are both excited and humbled by the selection committee’s invitation,”

The psychological thriller is quite the departure for Natalie Portman who plays Nina, a talented ballerina whose life is turned upside down when she lands the lead in Swan Lake.  Her sanity is tested upon the introduction of Lily (Mila Kunis), an equally talented ballerina who possesses all the inhibitions that Nina lacks.  Barbara Hershey also stars as Nina’s overbearing mother and Vincent Cassel portrays Nina and Lily’s demanding ballet instructor. Portman had this to say about her role:

“The character was very interesting to play, always challenging and surprising. The fact that I had spent so much time with the idea — Darren and I started discussing doing the film in 2000 — allowed it to marinate a little before we shot.”

As stated in yesterday’s article, ‘Black Swan’ premiering at the Venice Film Festival could easily catapult it straight into the awards season mix; something that’s not foreign territory to both Portman and Aronofsky.
