Weekend Box Office: August 20-22, 2010

The summer ‘blockbuster’ —used very lightly— season came to an abysmal close this weekend, as the five new releases failed to make any type of impact.  Actually, judging by the numbers it was a piss poor box office all around. Blame it on back to school shopping…

1. The Expendables

2. Vampires Suck

3. Eat Pray Love

4. Lottery Ticket

5. The Other Guys

6. Piranha 3D

7. Nanny McPhee Returns

8. The Switch

9. Inception

10. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

Proving they’re not so expendable after all, Sly Stallone’s ‘The Expendables’ claimed the top spot for the second week in a row. ‘Vampires Suck’ trailed closely behind with a weekend gross of $12.2M, while ‘Lottery Ticket’ fell short at number four with $11.1M.

‘The Other Guys’ rounded out the top five with $10.1M at the box office, barely edging out ‘Piranha 3D’ which opened at number six with a $10M gross on the weekend.  Jennifer Aniston continued her box office losing streak, as her latest effort ‘The Switch’ opened at number eight. ‘Inception’ and ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. The World’ completed the top 10.

Out this week: ‘Avatar’ re-release,  ‘The Last Exorcism’  and ‘Takers’.

Early prediction: ‘Takers’ should take the box office– easy.
