Lionsgate to go for Oscar gold

With their  recent acquisition of  ‘Rabbit Hole’ at the Toronto Film Festival, Lionsgate has officially planted their flag in the Oscar sand.  The film stars Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart and debuted to exceptional reviews,  but it’s not the only horse Lionsgate plans to put in the race.

‘Buried’, which stars Ryan Reynolds as a U.S contractor buried alive in a coffin after an attack by a group of Iraqis, also finds itself in the equation. And of course, ‘For Colored Girls’ is a favorite for Lionsgate too.  The major question is– which one of these films will receive the bigger push?

At this point in the game, this awards season is shaping up to be one of many surprises.  Lionsgate’s campaign can go either way— with ‘Rabbit Hole’ there’s the advantage of having an Oscar darling like Kidman attached to it,  and ‘For Colored Girls’ could very well pick up some ensemble awards along the way. As for ‘Buried’, this could be the film that officially welcomes Ryan Reynolds to the big leagues.
