2011 Film Independent Spirit Awards nominees

Just hours after Winter’s Bone dominated the Gotham Awards on the east coast, Jeremy Renner and Eva Mendes were on hand on the left coast to name the film, along with 127 Hours, Black Swan, Greenberg  and The Kids Are All Right as Best Feature nominees for the 2011 Film Independent Spirit Awards.  The awards show which celebrates 26 years this year, is traditionally held the night before the Oscars and honors independent films; films which usually end up on the Best Picture ballot at the Academy Awards.  This is year is no different with all the aforementioned films, minus Greenberg, on deck to become serious Oscar contenders. Winter’s Bone leads the pack with seven nominations.

Other nominees include Michelle Williams for Blue Valentine, yet her co-star Ryan Gosling was nowhere to be found, even though the Best Actress category honored six nominees and the male category only honored five. Interesting.  Also lost in the shuffle were Julianne Moore (The Kids Are All Right) and Halle Berry (Frankie & Alice), a big surprise that could foreshadow their awards season fate. A very special surprise included a Best First Feature  nomination for Tanya Hamilton’s Night Catches Us, starring Kerry Washington and Anthony Mackie.

The 26th Film Independent Awards takes place on Feb 26.  Hosted by Joel McHale, the awards will air exclusively on IFC at 10pm/ET, and for the second year in a row The Real Reel will live blog the entire event.  Stay tuned to the blog for the 2011 Awards Season live blog schedule.
