68th Annual Golden Globe Awards nominations

The Golden Globe nominations were announced this morning and in true Hollywood Foreign Press form, there were surprises, snubs and just outright WTF moments.  For starters, The Tourist was nominated for Best Motion Picture- Comedy, along with  nominations for  Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp in their respective categories; a clear ploy for a ratings boost, considering the movie tanked at the box office.  Depp was also nominated for Alice in Wonderland in the same category.  As stated last year in The Real Reel’s open letter to the HFPA, this bears repeating— if you want these actors to show up to your awards show, ask them to present, don’t nominate them!!

Despite the surprise nominations for The Tourist, good surprises included a nod for  Michelle Williams, Ryan Gosling, and Halle Berry in their respective categories; although the Berry nomination was more so a confirmation than a surprise.  On the comedy front, both Annette Bening and Julianne Moore will duke it out for Best Actress in a Motion Picture- Comedy, sadly this will not be the case in the weeks to come as Bening still has the upper hand. However, the HFPA could pull a fast one and award Moore with the top prize— wouldn’t that be something?

Notable snubs included zero love for True Grit and Leonardo DiCaprio, who starred in two pretty bad ass movies this year.   Also missing from the list were Barbara Hershey, Justin Timberlake and Armie Hammer in the supporting categories. Hammer and Timberlake’s dilemma is understandable– kind of difficult to nominate three people from the same movie in the same category— but Hershey’s snub is quite perplexing.  Her performance in Black Swan was absolutely on another level and hopefully she’ll be remembered as the season soldiers on.

Below you’ll find a full list of the Motion Picture nominees, which also feature some love for Burlesque and Red in the comedy categories.   The presentation of the Golden Globe Awards will take place LIVE on NBC at 8pm/ ET on January 16, 2011. Ricky Gervais will host.

  1. i wouldn’t have minded dicaprio getting in for shuter island, but really why couldn’t they nominate some of the women from For Colored Girls. Yes, i know it was poorly adapated. bu surely it didn’t matr how good or bad your movie was. in some of these categories it didn’ t matter if you were bad in it. disgraceful

    • I totally agree! I really would have loved for Thandie Newton or Anika Noni Rose to get a nomination. Then again, the Globes have always been known for their groupie status so the nominations are really not surprising. Hopefully the SAGs and Oscars do better.
